On Friday, February 21st, the singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist known as Luna Li—whose music blends elements of indie rock, dream pop, and psyche—opened for Mxmtoon as part of her Liminal Space tour at The Beacham in Orlando, FL.
While I had only recently discovered Luna Li, I was looking forward to seeing her perform live for the first time. After having listened to her newest album, ‘When a Thought Grows Wings’ on repeat, in the weeks leading up to the show, I was excited to see how her hypnotic vocals and dazzling instrumentals would translate from the studio recordings to a live performance.
Once inside, fans quickly made their way to the stage, buzzing with anticipation. It wasn’t long before Luna— wearing the cutest fuzzy earmuffs, a white button up shirt, and khaki pants—and her band made their way onto the stage. She then waved to the crowd with a smile stretched across her face and introduced herself before moving straight into the opening track of her new album, “Confusion Song,” which encapsulates the thoughts that passed through the singer’s mind as her 8-year relationship came to an end.
I’d been looking forward to seeing Li perform live for weeks, and when the moment finally arrived, it was everything I could have hoped for and more. I can still remember the wave of euphoria that washed over me as soon as I heard the song’s opening keyboard riff. It wasn’t long before her spellbinding vocals, bright instrumentals, and ethereal stage presence pulled us deep within her mystical world.
As the song came to an end, Luna reached for her flute and the crowd cheered—eager to hear her play her first instrument of the night. As Li and her band played the next song on the album, “Fantasy,” it felt as though we were all being transported into a fairytale realm through airy notes, floating vocals and bright synth riffs. Towards the second half of the song, Li traded her flute for an electric guitar, which she used to segue into an amalgamation of songs from her “jams” EP released in 2021—an entirely instrumental project.
The jams medley served as a perfect transition into “Cherry Pit”—a song she wrote upon discovering that her family’s summer cottage would be listed for sale. In the track, she writes about a lookout point near the cottage where they would often eat cherries together. Following her electrifying guitar solo at the end of the song, the crowd roared with applause. It was clear that the audience was quickly falling for the talented multi-instrumentalist.
She went on to play additional tracks from her new album, ‘When a Thought Grows Wings’ such as, “I Imagine” followed by “Enigami”— a song rich with atmospheric, dreamlike soundscapes and ethereal vocals that reverberated throughout the venue as rays of blue painted the crowd—pulling us deeper into our dreamlike state.
From there, she played “Afterglow”—a song Li wrote in the process of realizing her worth and learning how to love herself. In between songs she paused to speak to the crowd—expressing her gratitude saying, “I’m so happy to be here opening for Mxmtoon!”.
She then prefaced her next song by telling us a story about a book she’d read while at a friend’s house in which she’d stumbled upon a line that said, “If you’re having a rough day, ask yourself the question, ‘Will this matter to me in a year?’.” Afterward, she revealed it as the inspiration for her next song, titled “That’s life”. With a quiet smile, she picked up her acoustic guitar, and let the first few chords ring out.
Bringing their set to a close, Li and her band played two more songs from her new album, “Fear is an illusion” and “Bon voyage”, followed by an unreleased track titled, “You Didn’t Have to Go”.
Needless to say, Luna Li’s airy vocals, ethereal stage presence, and luminous melodies made for a truly enchanting night—one I had been looking forward to for weeks and that I will remember for years to come. If you’d like to experience the magic she brings to shows, you still can!
